Quick answer

Emoji stickers are images, not text characters, so you can resize them, place them on messages and make your own. On iPhone you turn photos and emoji into stickers in Messages; on Android, Gboard's Emoji Kitchen mixes two emoji into one sticker; WhatsApp and Telegram both have built-in sticker makers.

People use "emoji" and "sticker" as if they were the same thing. They aren't, and the difference explains a lot about what you can and can't do with each one.

Emoji vs stickers: what's the difference?#

An emoji is a character in the Unicode Standard, like a letter. When you send a grinning cat ๐Ÿ˜บ, you are sending a code, and the receiving phone draws it with its own font. That's why the same emoji looks different on an iPhone and a Samsung (we cover that in why emoji look different across devices).

A sticker is a picture file. It looks the same for everyone, it can be any shape or subject, and anyone can make one. Unicode itself points this out in its emoji submission FAQ: for very specific objects, there is "always the option of using emoji-style images (aka stickers)." In other words, if something will never become an official emoji, a sticker is the usual answer.

How to make emoji stickers on iPhone#

Apple turned emoji into stickers in iOS 17. Its iOS 17 announcement added "new emoji stickers," Live Stickers made by lifting the subject out of a photo, and a single sticker drawer in the keyboard for all of them.

Turn a photo into a sticker

  1. Open a photo with a clear subject (a pet works well) in the Photos app.
  2. Touch and hold the subject until it lifts away from the background.
  3. Tap Add Sticker. You can then add an effect such as outline or puffy.

Menu names can change between iOS versions. Apple's current steps: Make stickers from your photos.

Use an emoji as a sticker in Messages

Since iOS 17, emoji also work as stickers in Messages: instead of typing one into your text, you can place it on top of a message bubble. Apple's page on sending stickers in Messages covers the details.

Genmoji: make an emoji that doesn't exist

With Apple Intelligence, iOS 18.2 added Genmoji in December 2024. You type a description into the emoji keyboard and the iPhone generates a custom emoji-style image, which you can send inline, as a sticker or as a Tapback, according to Apple's announcement. Genmoji are images, not Unicode emoji, so people on other platforms receive a picture rather than a character. Apple's guide: Create Genmoji.

How to make emoji stickers on Android (Emoji Kitchen)#

On Android the best-known emoji sticker tool is Emoji Kitchen in Gboard. Google launched it in February 2020: tap a smiley in Gboard's emoji panel and it suggests sticker mashups you can send in apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Messages and Snapchat.

  1. Open Gboard and switch to the emoji panel.
  2. Tap one smiley, then a second. Gboard shows the combined sticker above the keyboard.
  3. Tap the sticker to send it.

Google's December 2020 update added picking any two smileys and said double-tapping one emoji gives a stronger version of it. There's also a web version: search "emoji kitchen" in Google and tap "Get cooking" (Google, July 2024). Our full Emoji Kitchen guide has more combinations, and our own Emoji Combiner lets you mash up emoji in the browser.

How to make WhatsApp stickers#

WhatsApp's own sticker maker came to Android in August 2024 after starting on iOS, per the WhatsApp blog. You can create a sticker from a photo, crop it, add text and draw on it.

  1. Open a chat and tap the sticker icon.
  2. Choose the option to create a sticker and pick a photo.
  3. Cut out the subject, add text or doodles, and send.

Button names differ slightly between the iPhone and Android apps.

If you're building a sticker pack app, WhatsApp's developer README sets strict rules:

SpecRequirement
SizeExactly 512 ร— 512 px
FormatWebP, transparent background
File size100 KB or less (static), 500 KB or less (animated)
Tray icon96 ร— 96 px, 50 KB or less
Pack size3 to 30 stickers, all static or all animated
Emoji tagsUp to 3 per sticker
Animation10 seconds max

The README also recommends an 8 px white outline. Those specs apply to third-party pack apps, not to stickers you make inside WhatsApp itself.

How to make Telegram stickers and custom emoji#

Telegram added an in-app sticker editor in April 2024. From the sticker panel, tap +, pick any photo, remove the background in one tap, add text or an outline and assign emoji, says the Telegram blog. Each set gets its own share link.

For bigger sets, Telegram's sticker documentation lists the formats:

TypeFormatSizeLengthFile limit
StaticPNG or WebPOne side 512 pxn/a512 KB (import guide)
AnimatedTGS512 ร— 5123 s, 60 fps, looping64 KB
VideoWebM (VP9), no soundOne side 512 px3 s, up to 30 fps256 KB
Custom emojiSame as above100 ร— 100 pxSameSame

Custom emoji are Telegram's closest thing to making your own emoji. Anyone can create them, but adding and using custom sets is a Telegram Premium feature, per the same page. The static size limit comes from Telegram's import guide.

Tips for stickers that look good#

  • Use a transparent background. WhatsApp requires it for packs, and stickers look cleaner on both light and dark chats.
  • Add an outline. A thin white edge keeps the sticker readable on any wallpaper.
  • Keep the subject large. Stickers are viewed small, so crop tight.
  • Tag with emoji. Both WhatsApp and Telegram use emoji tags so people can find your stickers by typing ๐Ÿ˜‚ or โค๏ธ. Pick the closest match from our emoji list.
  • Only use images you have rights to. WhatsApp requires stickers to be "legal, authorized, and acceptable" under its terms, and Telegram's import guide expects original work or your own packs from other apps. Avoid copying characters or logos you don't own.
